Joint Entrance Examination or JEE is a two-level national examination for admission in various streams of IIT and Engineering. JEE 2023 is conducted by the NTA, i.e., the National Testing Agency. The Dept of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India, beginning in 2019, has entrusted NTA with the responsibility of conducting the JEE Main 2023. JEE Main 2023 session 1 will be conducted on January 24, 25, 27, 28, 29, 30, and 31 and Session 2 on April 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12, 2023.


The Joint Entrance Examination (Main), or JEE (Main), consists of two papers. Students must appear for JEE Mains Paper I to get admission to UG Engineering Programs like (B.E/B.Tech.) at NITs, IIITs, other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions, commonly known as CFTIs, and Institutions/Universities funded/recognized by participating State Governments. JEE Main is also an eligibility exam for JEE Advanced 2023, which is used to gain admission to IITs. Paper 2 is held for admission to the country's B. Arch and B. Planning programmes.


The JEE (Main) 2023 will be held in two sessions for admission to the academic year 2023 - 24.

JEE Main Syllabus by NTA

JEE Main has 3 different types of papers for various courses. Students have to choose the papers based on the course that they wanted to get into.

  • Paper 1 – For admission to B. Tech/B.E.

  • Paper 2A – For admission to B. Arch.

  • Paper 2B – For admission in B. Planning.

JEE Main Paper 1 has Three Sections in it.

  • Physics

  • Chemistry

  • Mathematics

JEE Main Paper 2A Consists of Three Sections.

  • Mathematics

  • Aptitude

  • Drawing

JEE Main Paper 2B also has Three Sections.

  • Mathematics

  • Aptitude 

  • Planning related questions

Candidates who are preparing for Engineering should practice from the syllabus of Paper 1. Those who are preparing for Architecture should refer to the syllabus for Paper 2A. Finally, students who want to pursue B.Planning must follow the syllabus of Paper 2B.


The JEE Main updated syllabus is based on the Class 11 and Class 12 syllabus, as prescribed by the CBSE board.

Exam Pattern of JEE Main 2023 Paper 1

Knowing about the exam pattern will help the candidates in their preparation as they will get to know what type of questions will be asked in the examination. Here is the JEE Main 2023 Paper 1 examination pattern:

  • Mode of Examination: Online (Computer-based)

  • Duration of Examination: 3 hours

  • Subjects: Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics

  • Maximum Number of Questions: 25 Maths questions + 25 Physics questions  + 25 Chemistry questions = 75 questions

  • Types of Questions: 

  • Physics: 5 numerical-based questions and 20 MCQs

  • Chemistry: 5 numerical-based questions and 20 MCQs

  • Mathematics: 5 numerical-based questions and 20 MCQs

  • Total Marks: 300 marks

  • Marking Scheme 

For MCQs: 4 marks for correct answers

       -1 mark for incorrect answer

        0 marks for unattempted questions

For Numerical-Based Questions:  4 marks for correct answers

0 marks for incorrect answers

0 marks for unattempted questions

  • Languages used in the Examination: Hindi, English, and Gujarati


Syllabus for JEE Main Paper 2A and 2B

Section 2A:

Awareness of persons, places, Buildings, Materials. Objects, Texture related to Architecture and build-environment. Visualising three-dimensional objects from two-dimensional drawings. Visualising. different sides of three-dimensional objects. Analytical Reasoning Mental Ability (Visual, Numerical and Verbal).


Section 2B:

Three dimensional - perception: Understanding and appreciation of scale and proportion of objects, colour texture, harmony and contrast, building forms and elements. Design and drawing of geometrical or abstract shapes and patterns in pencil. Transformation of forms both 2D and 3D union, rotation subtraction, development of surfaces and volumes, elevations Generation of Plan and 3 D views of objects. Creating two dimensional and three dimensional compositions using given shapes and forms.


Sketching of scenes and activities from memory of urbanscape (monuments, public space, festivals, market, street scenes, recreational spaces, etc.), landscape (river fronts, jungles, trees, plants, etc.) and rural life.


JEE Main Paper 2A and 2B Exam Pattern

  • Mode of Examination: Online (Computer-based)

  • Duration of Examination: 3 hours

  • Subjects: Drawing (B. Arch.) or Planning (B. Plan.), General Aptitude and Mathematics

  • Maximum Number of Questions: 

B. Arch.: 2 Drawing questions + 50 Aptitude questions + 25 Maths questions = 77 questions

B. Plan.: 25 Planning questions + 25 Maths questions + 50 questions = 100 questions

  • Types of Questions:

Maths: 5 Numerical-based questions and 20 MCQs

Aptitude: 50 MCQs

B. Arch.: 2 Drawing questions

B. Plan.: 25 MCQs for Planning

  • Total Marks: 400 marks

  • Marking Scheme:

For MCQs: 4 marks for correct answers

-1 mark for incorrect answer

0 marks for unattempted question

For Drawing Questions: 100 marks for 2 drawing questions

  • Languages used in the Examination – Hindi, English and Gujarati

NTA will release the admit card for JEE Main 2023 January and April Sessions at https://jeemain.nta.nic.in/ 15 days prior to the exam date for the registered candidates. JEE Main 2023 state rank lists will be released by the state counselling committees for admissions to the 85% state quota and to all seats in IIT colleges. JEE Main 2023 state rank lists are based on the marks obtained in entrance exams. Candidates can check the JEE Main 2023 state rank list on the official website or on our site.
The NTA will conduct JEE Main 2023 counselling at https://josaa.nic.in/. There will be two rounds of counselling for admission under All India Quota (AIQ), deemed and central universities, NITs and CFTIs. A mop-up round of JEE Main counselling will be conducted excluding 15% AIQ seats, while the dates of JEE Main 2023 June and July session counselling for 85% state quota seats will be announced by the respective state authorities.

1. What are the benefits of the multiple sessions in JEE Mains 2022?
