We are delighted to announce the partnership between Ocean Independence and the Dutch design company, Zijlstra Interiors, at the 2023 Palma International Boat Show, where we will collaborate on the design and build of our exhibition space. In light of our new partnership, we talk with Jos Aarts, Owner of Zijlstra Interiors, to highlight what they offer to the industry.
For over 80 years, Zijlstra Interiors has been creating luxurious interior designs for yachts. According to Jos, “We started in 1941 by providing furniture upholstery for a wide range of clients.” However, it wasn’t until 1980 when Zijlstra Interiors received its first assignment from Feadship to upholster the outdoor cushions on the 48-meter yacht, DARIA. Since then, the company has expanded its services, and today, Zijlstra Interiors is a specialist in window decoration and produces everything in-house with its own upholstery workshop, woodworking studio, and assembly workspace.
Zijlstra Interiors also shared that yacht construction has developed significantly over the years. “Quality has increased with work becoming more detailed and better.” This development has allowed Zijlstra Interiors to further develop their already-refined skills in interior design, and comfortably meet the exceptionally high standard of workmanship and design we’ve come to expect from the likes of Feadship.
When asked about advice for yacht owners looking to create a bespoke interior design, Zijlstra Interiors suggests working closely with a team of experts to create a tailor-made interior. “We work together with world-renowned architects and shipyards. Rather than source for ‘off-the-shelf’ products, we can design, develop and produce tailor-made interior pieces in-house,” said a spokesperson for the company. The company’s dedication and knowledge about luxury yacht interiors allow it to bring together the finest materials to create a unique interior that reflects the Owner’s style and preferences.
Zijlstra Interiors has worked on many memorable projects over the years. One of the most special projects was the motor yacht SIRAN (Feadship) in 1992. “This project took our work to another level because of the detailed interior design.” Another memorable project is the motor yacht VENUS (Feadship), built in 2012. Unique to this project are the window decorations, which is a core speciality of ours. Lastly, the project motor yacht SAVANNAH (Feadship) is memorable because of the exceptionally high-quality standards.
Looking towards the future, Zijlstra Interiors is eager to take on new challenges to continue the upward trajectory towards even better design and construction. “Every new project we take on is a new challenge because nothing is the same. It is important that we keep developing and improving our products to maintain and even improve the quality.”
